This course will examine the history of war and its impact on society. The origins of war, the search for peace throughout the ages, leadership and the role of heroes, military maneuvers, fortifications and defenses, sieges, battles, technological advances, conquest and surrender will be looked at. Some of the most important wars, campaigns and battles will be discussed in both their political and military aspects. Ethical and social implications, such as the rules of war and morality of torture, will also be considered. In class discussion will be an integral part of the course.
